Israel is always paramount in the
consciousness of Maimonides students, from the first week of kindergarten
through graduation day. Our connection as a People to the land is interwoven
through the entire curriculum, one of the key factors which defines
who we are as a school and distinguishes us as an institution.
Elementary School students and teachers demonstrate their connection
to Israel through a range of special activities. Yom Ha'Atzmaut,
Yom HaZikaron and Yom Yerushalyim are observed with imagination
and passion, as the school community vicariously shares these important
occasions. Our younger students also provide the backbone of Maimonides’
delegation to the annual Salute to Israel parade in New York City.
Enhancing students’ bond with Israel in the Elementary
School is constant interaction with Israeli role models. This includes
several teachers as well as two shlichot t'zhirot—young
women who spend a year in Boston sharing their knowledge of Israel in
elementary schools and establishing a chapter of the Bnei Akiva
religious Zionist youth organization. Maimonides also hosts Bnot
Sherut Leumi—women fulfilling their Israeli national service
commitment by teaching in the diaspora. Their daily presence brings
the reality of Israel directly and vividly to each student.
Hebrew language instruction also provides a backdrop for experiencing
Israel in an authentic way. For example, students mark Army Day by visiting
several classroom "induction stations," completing health
forms, taking vision exams, accepting uniforms and reading Israeli newspapers,
all in Hebrew.
The connection that our students have with Israel further matures throughout
their Middle and Upper School years, so much so that more than 50 percent
of Maimondies’ graduating seniors defer their college matriculation
each year to spend time learning in Israeli institutions.
Almost 150 Maimonides School alumni have become citizens of Israel.
They are physicians, engineers, teachers, businesspersons, political
activists, even a professional basketball player. Through their continuing
loyalty to and affection for Maimonides, these graduates are an invaluable
resource for our students and teachers.
