2017-18 School Year Off to a Great Start!

2017 Commencement: Two Milestones, 46 Graduates


Maimonides School’s 65th commencement ceremony Sunday morning featured a pair of milestones that reinforced the school’s reputation as a national landmark in Jewish education for eight decades.

Forty-six seniors received diplomas to culminate the program. The second name on that roster was Arthur Bloomfield, and it was announced that he is the school’s 2,000th high school graduate.

Seniors Prepared to Be Advocates for Israel


Rabbi Dov Huff, Maimonides Middle and Upper School Judaic studies principal, shared an emotional experience with teachers in a recent memorandum.

“After our Yom Ha'atzmaut chagiga and parade ended, we sent the students back to class. As everything settled down, I looked around the corner to find the juniors, wearing blue and white face paint, waving Israeli flags, going into classrooms and singing Am Yisrael Chai. It was very powerful. Their ruach and their modelling of love for Eretz Yisrael were amazing."

Gelman Family a Major Tournament Sponsor, Honoring Leland ’82, z”l


The invitational basketball tournament was a mainstay on the community calendar during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The tournament was rejuvenated four years ago, through the efforts of Ahron ’76 and Sheera (Kessler) Solomont ’76, co-chairs.
Now the tournament has announced a long-term major sponsor, the Gelman family, honoring their beloved brother Leland Elliot Gelman ’82, z”l, who passed away on October 26, 2014 at the age of 50. The event will henceforth be called the Maimonides Invitational Basketball Tournament in Memory of Leland Gelman, z”l.
